This week may have been dominated by the Queen’s Speech, but look a little closer and there have been some other noteworthy stories. For the first time since the election we have heard from Nick Clegg since the Lib Dems’ disappointment and Labour continues to debate its future and ongoing leadership battle. So, what can we all learn from the political news of the week?

  1. The media love set-piece political events. Following hot on the heels of the Queen’s Speech will be another Budget.
  2. Politicians never really go away. George Galloway is back and has placed himself in the running to be Mayor of London. Even the spectre of David Milliband still looms large.
  3. Manifestos still mean something. The Queen’s Speech was basically the implementation of the Conservative Party manifesto with few concessions.
  4. Who needs policies? Labour’s leadership candidates continue to attract big name supporters despite not having revealed much in the way of policy ideas.
  5. Outrage doesn’t beat power. However much politicians may moan about Sepp Blatter and FIFA, they can’t do anything about it as their influence only extends so far
